HOW TO USE FOOD AS MEDICINE TO PREVENT, AND REVERSE CHRONIC DISEASES

Promoting a healthful diet in patients helps in the prevention and reversal of chronic diseases, such as CVD, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, as reported by the presentation at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.

Michelle McMacken, MD, and assistant professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine stated during her presentation that at least seven, and in particular the top four, out of the ten leading causes of death in the United States, are directly associated with diet choices,

These conditions encompass heart disease, lung disease, cancer, diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, and kidney disease.

POWER OF NUTRITION

Approximately half of all deaths due to heart disease, diabetes and stroke and are due to poor, suboptimal diet.

Promoting a healthful diet in patients helps in the prevention and reversal of chronic diseases, such as CVD, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

We now understand that a poor diet is accountable for more deaths from chronic disease at the population level than smoking.

according to McMacken, Foods and eating patterns are categorized into three: healthful, debatable and unhealthful, Foods considered as healthful, including whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds, are foods promote health and prevent disease. On the other hand, foods categorized as unhealthful, and harmful include processed meat, red meat, refined grains, added sugar, and ultra-processed foods. Debatable Foods that shown both benefits and harms include poultry, dairy, eggs, and fish.

According to her, most people spend their calories and prioritize their foods with those in the unhealthful and debatable categories. So, the question is ‘How can we educate our patients to eat more of the healthful foods.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

According to McMacken red and processed meat are connected with the most cardiovascular risk. According to her Individuals who follow a meatless diet have a 24% to 29% reduced risk of mortality and a 32% reduced risk of incident cases.

She said sugars and refined grains have a very strong role in quickening the risk of coronary artery disease, CVD and stroke.

Vegetables and Fruits serve as food as medicine and are associated with an incredible reduction in the risk of CV.  According to McMacken, the taking of Just two and a half servings of fruits and vegetables a day causes 8% reduction in risk of coronary heart disease, 16% in stroke and 10% in dying of anything.

Getting your patients to add vegetables, and just one or two fruits a day, work perfectly in CV risk and mortality.

INSULIN RESISTANCE

According to McMacken processed meat is the most closely associated to type 2 diabetes risk, rendering a 37% increased risk.

However, there is a reduction in the risk of diabetes when eating whole grains and fruit. Consumption of one piece of fruit a day is food as medicine in reducing the risk of diabetes by 12%.

CANCER PREVENTION

Eating 100 grams of red meat per day enhances the risk of colorectal cancer by 17% and 18% by consuming 50 grams of the processed meat

Consumption of whole grains is food as medicine for effective for reduction of the cancer risk, colorectal and total cancer mortality by 17%.
